Velammal College of Engineering and Technology, Madurai was established in the year 2007 to impart quality technical education. It is a self-financing non-minority Institution approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi, affiliated to Anna University, Chennai, accredited with "A" Grade by NAAC and accredited by NBA. This college is founded by Shri. M.V. Muthuramalingam, Professional Engineer and the Chairman of the Velammal Educational Trust, Chennai and Madurai. Velammal Group has 64 Institutions, 1, 20,000 students and 12,000 faculty members under its fold. The Institute has a team of dedicated faculty specialized in various branches of Engineering, Science and Humanities and it offers six U.G Programmes and five P.G Programmes. Four Departments are recognized as Research Centers under Anna University, Chennai. The institute has received R&D fund to the tune of Rs. 6.89 Crores.

    The Department of Mechanical Engineering was started in the year 2008 and it offers B.E. (MECH), M.E. (Manufacturing Engineering) & Ph.D. (Mechanical Engineering). The Department of Mechanical Engineering was accredited by TCS and WIPRO in the year 2012.The department has a Business Incubator CIPD-BI, recognized by Ministry of MSME, Govt. of India carrying out research and consultancy projects worth Rs.1.02 crores which resulted in 3 start-ups, 21 provisional patents (5 published, 2 received FER) as of now. In addition, department faculty are actively involved in funded research projects worth Rs.1.52 crores received from various agencies such as AICTE, BIRAC, DRDO, DST. More than 150 research papers of faculty members have been published in refereed Journals & Conferences and the department produced 8 Ph.D.scholars in the past three years. MoUs have been signed with leading organizations viz. Native Lead Foundation, iq6sigma, THORS Academy for equipping Entrepreneurial skills, Lean Six Sigma techniques and experiential industry knowledge among students. The department of Mechanical Engineering has produced 55 UG and 9 PG Rank holders including one Gold medal in Anna University Examinations. Presence of our alumni is felt in prominent organizations viz. Apollo Tyres, Aruna Alloys, Benz, BGR, Cognizant, Continental, Infosys, McDermott, Renault Nissan, TCS, TVS, Severn Glocon, Wipro, ZOHO etc. Our students actively participated in National level innovative product development contests and bagged cash awards to the tune of Rs.39.85 lakhs in evens like i3, NDRF, NRDC, Infymaker’16, DRDO DRUSE, BIRAC SoCH’17, AICTE-ECI-ISTE Chhatra Vishwakarma Award’18 during the last 3 years.
